i love a giveaway.andpie.

my recent success in winning cool stuff has prompted me to enter every possible giveaway on blogs i read especially when it comes to books and yarn.  that being said after hearing the recent episode of the craftlit podcast, which featured an interview with andi and her book big foot knits, i couldn't resist.  this is a must for any sock knitter's library.  i love my hand-knit socks, but sometimes the fit isn't always "spot on".  this book goes beyond just giving pattern instructions and provides a recipe or template to customizing them for optimal fit. so i'm doing my part by spreading the word.  this also reminds me that i have sorely neglecting this blog, and i hope to change that.  may to august has kept me busy, while at the same time i've been trying to be "not too busy". i've wanted to spend more time closer to home.  the next big thing is getting andrew ready for college-move in day is NEXT WEEK-gah! i'm really gonna miss him, but am excited for him at the same time.  i'll be changing a lot of my daily routine, especially kitchen duties, so perhaps that will provide some moderately interesting content to bring to the blog.  in the meantime, i'll leave you with a photo of the lemon meringue pie andrew made yesterday. andrew heading off to college is going to be great on my waistline.

crazy but true

it's saturday and i'm sitting on the couch, knitting andrew's hat (pj's is done), and i'm watching foodnetwork and this cooking diva- this is very rare indeed, and i'm loving it. will have the musical in a couple hours, a lot of work has gone into this program, can't wait to see it and everyone in costume.

thanks mr. c.

mr. c as in christopher columbus, thanks to him i had the day off- yea,so here's how the day went:

hit the bike at 4:30, a whole hour to devote today- then floor exercises:

6:29 am: homemade biscuits for the boys- they were small, but very tasty

7:15 am drop andrew off at school for snow boarding lessons, andrew's photo not so good as it was still dark-then pj at 7:30- then drop off dry cleaning- home by 7:45 am

8:00 am head downstairs to tackle the mini book project- thermos of coffee and i-pod with speakers ready to go ---

boxes of photos that have had a preliminary sorting: goal is to cut paper, sort photos again, some throwing out, and cut covers to make mini albums (books), doing this in stages

madam guillotine from work- does a great job with multiple sheets of paper and chip board

10:00 am take a break and check the patio- geraniums still look pretty good- had already pulled out the summer plants that were "spent"

a quick photo session- i did a little shopping at the quilt store on saturday- great bargains 25, 30 and 70% off!

and i won a door prize! a book by this author i knew the name was familar- a modern day william morris-i'm in love! my first quilt top "morris garden" is based on his designs.

2:25 pm coffee break and finished up project. the remaining photos are my albums for NY, Boston and Vegas, also the bottom box are "professional" photos of family members that are either 5x7 or 8x10, and i haven't quit decided what to do with them yet, but i did meet my goal for the day-

end of phase 1 of the mini books -good results- really did little thinking in terms of paper-wanted to use up stuff i had on hand and wanted this to be a quick deal-

3:15 a visit outside- say hello to the hairy toad lillies- bought these at an eclectic nursery several years ago, and brought them to our new house, i♥them. they love the shade or dappled sun, so if anyone wants some-they really spread. . .

3:45 pm i met a new friend-he was a big'un

landscape phase 1 finished, planted burgundy mums and some pansies. will tackle the containers in a couple weeks, transplanted a few items that were in containers over the summer, and tidied this bed, there is still a bit of summer color, also did a bit of transplanting around the birdbath- don't know if the stuff will come back, but wanted to give it a try rather than throwing the ferns and caladiums in the trash- we'll see . .

whew- i'm a bit tired from all that, but glad i stuck with it:: want to have the mini albums totally done by thanksgiving- did manage to enjoy a nice steak dinner and a glass of wine- looking forward to a day of quilting with kathy- must remember to do photos

happy monday ya'll

simply sweet

normally i don't have a sweet tooth, and would choose a plate of luscious pasta over cheesecake any day, but lately, i've had great success with desserts.
no pictures, so you'll have to visualize.
it's been helpful that fruit so far has been soooo good, plentiful and cheap, or at least cheaper than in previous years!--strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and peaches. dessert success can thank the resourcefulness of freezing the leftover scones, as they became a wonderful crunchy topping for the peach/blueberry crumble. i put the scones in the food processor to crumble them, added cinnamon and brown sugar, and melted butter. unlike before, this time i toasted the crumbs, and they came out in granola like clumps- yum. i topped the blueberries/peaches that had been simmered in brown sugar, cinnamon and grand marnier, and baked till bubbly- mmmmmmm! even better with vanilla ice cream-
speaking of ice cream, was checking out the fridge, and noticed that it was time to use the raspberries and strawberries i had bought a few days ago- what happens? a very simple dessert- vanilla ice cream with sliced strawberries and raspberries and a drizzle of chocolate syrup-oh my, incredibly good-
to continue the fruity goodness this morning's breakfast was vanilla yogurt with the remaining raspberries, some strawberries, and topped with the scone crumbles- yea- that's good eating-

say what's in your freezer begging to be re-created?

boston

totally loved this place, don't know if it was because the weather was just perfect, or what--but was able to spend a few hour in the downtown area, well after the celtic victory parade, but there was still plenty of green to be seen, and was enchanted by cambridge. here's what i went, and what i did--woolcott & co yarn shop-literally 150 feet from the hotel- great selection even though the shop was very small, still love the one's at "home" better. Also visited mind's eye- another very small shop about a mile from the hotel, the owner was very nice, and i bought some of her very own dyed yarn. i went here and here- and saw phenominal art- some of my favorite pieces that i studied at ksu were on the walls, this and this and this are but a few of the paintings.

dining included lunch from here, here, here, and here - caprese sandwich on baguette (oh my!), dessert here, dinner here, here and here-this place was just okay. my travel mate doesn't do seafood or red meat, so in boston that drastically limited us. there are some places near paul revere's house that looked wonderful, very "one of a kind" places. starbucks was not as plentiful in cambridge as nyc, but they do have peet's coffee, 1 starbucks- i did spot another starbucks on our last day that was tucked wayyyy back in a corner- several tea shops, and
also some very neat little shops tucked here and there. harvard's campus was beautiful, the subway and trolley very easy to use-- learned on this trip it pays to arrive a day early to scope out the dining opportunities, and that i really love indian food! me thinks an indian cookbook will be on my shelf very soon!

other than walking around that was pretty much what i did from tuesday-friday besides sit in training/meeting, and work on my sock!

definately would like to go back, and would also like to visit chicago, bowling green (ky) not sure why, and salem (mass)-- i'll leave you with a mosaic of some of the sights.

what do you get when you add . . .

rhubarb, strawberries, a handful of brown sugar, a few shakes of cinnamon, a splash of oj, some thawed out scones leftover from a birthday party, this was the KEY ingredient, melted butter, and some HEATH toffee bits . . .

well one yummy dessert- rhubarb and strawberry surprise!

other weekend stuff:

the boys and i got the pinestraw done in just a couple hours- here are a few shots of what 50 bales looks like, the boys will get a bonus with their bi-weekly allowance, and they got to eat lunch at Moes, i know- cringe, but they enjoyed it so it's all good! the front and back definitely look better with the pinestraw.

marked several summer projects as "done"-yea!

did some serious grilling- 3 meals on this baby- and the steak fajitas with the vidalias-mmmmm

Here's a glimpse at the hydrangeas- yes, i have more than one bloom this time-

on the front porch i went with a container of mixed sun loving plants near the steps, and at the door two pots with caladiums and ferns- we'll see how these do-should be getting our porch and step railings soon.

the weekend was jammed packed, but i did manage to get to the pool for a couple hours on sunday, gave me a chance to do some magazine reading. is it just me or was bon apetit a bit skimpy this month?
