10 (wonderful) things I did this weekend

Carole's prompt was one that was easy enough since I had a long visit with my in-laws. I'll have to add a photo on Wednesday. . .

10. Watched college football (a lot!)
 9. Ate some great food
 8. Watched professional baseball, I haven't done that in a long time
 7. Watched professional football (notice a pattern?!)
 6. Did a lot of knitting- I brought plenty to do and some frogging
 5. Went on several walks, I think I did close to 20 miles in 4 days
 4. Played zilch
 3. Drank some good wine
 2. Did some reading-am half way through the current Outlander series
 1. Spent time with 2 wonderful people

Hope everyone else had a pleasant weekend

WIP Wednesday-Does this count?

I'm still working on the parabola, sommer sleeveless tank and aperture along with the socks.  There was not by way of knitting this past weekend, but I plan to do lots while I'm at my in-laws.  I also have 4 sweaters to frog.  My next project that is in the wings is the Kaffe [Rowan] Pure Wool Worsted KAL.  I had hoped to have already cast on for the first square, but that hasn't happened yet.  I have the yarn, needles and instructions, so I'm close enough for posting purposes [right!] :-)  Now if I could count all the knitting I've done in my head . . .

5 on Friday-Fall is here!

1. Fall seems to really be here, time for some comfort foods!  I made a tomato and goat cheese cobbler last night for dinner and it was pretty good.  I didn't really care for the biscuits, and next time I make this I'll make traditional biscuits instead.  The biscuit dough in this recipe used flour and cornmeal.  Other than that it was yummy, and the thyme made it feel/taste very fall-esque.

2. Ready for football this weekend, especially since the Falcons are doing pretty good compared to other teams.  Feeling the team spirit and wearing my Falcons shirt (long sleeves!) at work today.

3.  Weekend plans for an outdoor bike ride and a church dinner on the grounds-always fun.

4. Thinking about the upcoming holidays, and then NOT wanting to think about the upcoming holidays.

5. Looking forward to knitting on my sleeveless sommer top, and casting on aperture.

WIP Wednesday-Startitis

I am still making progress on my 2 socks, sommer sleevless top, and parabola.  I had really hoped to be further along that what I am, but that's totally okay.  I am getting excited about my next project-Aperture, I've done the one swatch in stockinette, and need to do another swatch using the modified fisherman rib.  The yarn is pretty dark so I need the right light for this project.  I'm hoping to start this project this week.  My next big project is frogging a few sweaters and repurposing the yarn for other fall/winter knitting.  Fall is definitely in the air so this cardigan is going to be a great addition.

WIP-Wednesday-Still moving along.

I'm still making progress on my Parabola and Sommer Sleevless Top (SST). Saturday's road trip allowed me to make good progress on the inner layer of the Parabola, and all the knitting is completed, and it needs to be blocked. The photo shows my second swatch-I went up a needle size and after reading the instructions again [which I'm glad I did] I need to get 18 sts over 4 inches instead of 16.  So far this swatch is real close.  I'm going to work some more rows then block it to be sure.  However, I'm thinking, I'll probably stick with the size 7 needles used in this swatch as I like the fabric, and I don't want the outer piece to be scraggly looking.  I think the fact that it's made out of silk cloud and will be very billowy I could get away with this needle size provided I don't hold the yarn too tight.  I'm really pleased with the way the inner piece-Shibui staccato=true love.
My SST is coming along-I've done 4 of the 7 decreases and you can start to see the chevron pattern.  It's a pretty intuitive pattern, and is good for social knitting provided you can count to 8, which I thought I could do, but sometimes I get only to 7!   I do have to give my hands a break with this project as the yarn doesn't have a lot of give, but I am still loving it.
I have a lot of things to catch up to on over the next few days, so I don't know how much knitting I'll get done.  I will be working on the Falcons socks tomorrow night at the game, and I wouldn't be surprised if I get a sock completed-we'll see.  Right now I'm thinking about fall/winter and baby knits.  In my mind I want to be in a certain place with my knitting and quilting projects before the holidays arrive, so I'm trying not to get too far ahead of myself.  I'd love to work on hats and other small projects during November and December.  It's predicted that we'll have another winter similar to last year, and if that's the case I'd love to have some new things ready to go on the needles when I'm "stuck" inside.  What's got you "moving" along?

WIP Wednesday-Socks

Here are the other 2 things I'm currently working on:

My Falcon's Football socks.  I take socks to the games to keep me busy during those arduous TV commercials. I tend towards just a plain vanilla sock so that there's not tons of thought required.  This year I wanted something in the team colors.  I had hoped to get some yarn from Fab Funky Fibers, but she was not taking any custom orders.  She referred me to Loopy Ewe and that had just what I was looking for.  These socks are being knit out of the Biscotte & Cie Felix Self-stripping yarn in the colorway Eragon.  This yarn has been lovely to work with, and I enjoy watching the stripes come around.  I had cast on the cuff during a pre-season game we watched on TV, and then worked the leg, heel flap, and began to turn the heel during Sunday's rather thrilling game against the NO Saints.  The goal is to have them finished by the end of the season, but if I keep up this pace I may have to cast on another pair.
My other pair of socks are again-just vanilla. This is my 3rd attempt at socks using this yarn.  Note to self avoid dark colored yarn for socks.  This is Miss Babs Windsor Monochrome in the colorway lilacs.  I don't even think she uses this base anymore, and honestly this yarn has just been okay to knit with, perhaps I'm just tired of it.  I purchased this at the Southeaster Animal and Fiber Festival (SAFF) in 2010, and really wanted to get it out of my stash-I have completed one sock, including the toe grafting! And am now on the heel flap of sock #2.  I'm looking forward to adding 2 pairs to my sock drawer, and hopefully a few others before the spring.  My feet get cold, so I get  a lot of use out of my wool socks.
I continue to make great progress on my Sommer Sleevless Top and Parabola.  I plan to swatch for the outer layer of Parabola this weekend.  Once these are off the needles I plan to start Apeture, but still need to swatch for that project.  What's on your needles or in your queue?

WIP Wednesday

Being inspired by Mary [as always] I'm going to post some knitting progress.  Aside from 2 pairs of socks on the needles, my current WIPs are

Parabola, part of the Shibui-Geometry series, and I'm loving this so far.  The pattern is pretty straight forward and I'm already at the neck and armhole shaping.  This tank has two layers the bottom layer has a razor back which provides some interesting shaping, and the top layer has a standard tank construction.  The design of this top is such that you can use the top layer as a cowl, but I plan to make a separate cowl following the suggestion of a knitter of Ravelry.  I'm knitting this out of Shibui Staccato-colorway Tar for the razorback piece, and for the top layer I'm using Shibui Silk Cloud-colorway fog.  I'm planning to pair it with some skinny black jeans as my holiday outfit.

My final summer piece is the Sommer Sleeveless Top by Mari Chiba and featured by Juniper Moon Farm.  As suggested, I'm knitting this out of JMF's new yarn- Zooey-Colorway 03-White Pepper which I am loving!  I fully plan to knit something else out of this yarn; I really love the neutral colors it comes in too.  However, I don't understand why the model featured in the pattern looks so irritated.  Really that's my own complaint.
I will be going to a quilt show next Saturday with my quilt club.  I'll be taking one of these to work on while in the car, so hopefully there will be a FO from this post very soon.

Fall knitting?

On my way into work this morning the temperature got me thinking about fall knitting?
On my home this afternoon-I'm thinking it's not quite time-yet!
I'm hoping that this long holiday weekend will be productive, and that there will be some posts next week of WIPs, FOs, and Queued projects.  Hope you have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.  I'll get to see both my boys this weekend-a pleasant change of plans.

S'okay to Wait

The reason for Carole's prompt for today naturally brought tear to my eyes; sometimes it's really no fun being an adult.  I have to say that how I spent my time spent waiting has changed a lot over the years.  I have spent numerous hours waiting in doctors offices for various appointments, both my own, and for members of my family.  Once when the boys were smallish, maybe 7 and 9, we had a 3 hour wait at my mother's cardiologist.  No one bothered to call the patients to let them know that the doctor had to perform emergency surgery, and that the routine appointments would be delayed (ugh!).  I think the advent of the wifi, social media, and advancements in cell phone technology have changed the concept of waiting, whether for good or bad.  My list includes past and present ways to deal with waiting.

10.  Pray-circumstances may be such that this is really the only thing that can bring peace.
  9.  Play-I always made sure my boys had plenty of things to play with-small cars, legos, coloring books,  Game Boys, etc.
  8.  Picnic-my tote bag always had goldfish, fruit, granola bars, juice boxes or water.  I never knew how long of a wait we'd have at times, and hungry people= grumpy people, and I'm referring mostly to myself!  The DMV in Marietta was known for such a long wait that someone came up with the idea of a hot dog cart because you could really be there for several hours.
  7.  Read-I usually have something in my bag, a magazine or book.
  6.  Stay connected-check emails, Instagram, Twitter, but I rarely make phone calls, sometimes it's real annoying to have to listen to someone else's chatter.  I always leave the waiting room if I have to take a phone call is more than a half minute.
  5.  Instagram and take other photos-kinda fun, but I am sure it annoys other folks.
  4.  Chat/listen-waiting is stressful for people, and it can be comforting to others to have someone just to listen or talk with them.  I admit, I'm not always good about initiating a conversation, but if someone wants to engage me, I'm game.
  3.  Peruse the internet- Pinterest, blogs, other websites-see #6
  2.  Watch TV-sometimes the waiting room will actually have something worth watching-I love when the channel is set to HGTV, the news, not so much.
  1. KNITTING! Even if the wait is only 15 minutes, I always have my knitting with me.  I try to keep projects with me that are not too involved or complicated- see #10, #4, and #2.  The knitting usually generates some conversation, or at least some "looks".

So yea, I don't actually mind waiting these days now that I don't have little one's to occupy, and I still come with snacks and water.  I have been fortunate to have only the rare waiting event where only #10 is app.

Repeats.

Carole's prompt today is about knitting patterns you'd knit over and over.  For this list I'm going to put my own spin on the subject.  I rarely knit the same pattern over and over, maybe I get distracted too easily with the shiny new patterns out there.  There are however many yarns or items that I could use/do over and over, so here goes-

10.  Socks-portable, useful, fun, endless patterns and yarns
  9.  Liberty wool
  8.  Berroco Vintage and Vintage DK
  7.  Janna's Tunic (would love one in black)
  6.  Flax (such an easy pattern-would like more in other colors)
  5.  Malabrigo yarns-any weight-love how it knits up
  4.  Hats- see #10-need more of these
  3.  Pullovers-(have done several of these this year)
  2.  Summer-y tanks (Gretel, Ida, Bonny)
  1.  Shibui- (anything escept Kalvo-not impressed with this yarn)

Since I don't normally give away what I knit, I haven't had a real need to knit a pattern multiple times.  Maybe it's time I changed that?

i'd forgotten.

how much i enjoyed the open road on a bicycle.  of course, taking selfies while clipped into a road bike is probably not the smartest thing, but i couldn't resist.  summer riding has officially started with 3 rides over the last couple weekends.  sunday's ride started at 8 am, and i loved the peace, solitude, and the crisp morning.  the first couple rides i took sorta slow since it had been about 6 months since i had ridden my road bike.  i had to re-acclimate myself with shifting gears, clipping in and out, and paying attention to debris and wild life on the road all at the SAME time.  i do well to follow multiple instruction in a knitting pattern with AT THE SAME TIMES, cycling is a whole 'nother thing.  along with my other interests [hobbies], i like to set performance goals, so this summer/fall i'd like to:

         ~learn accident avoidance & safety
~how to change a bike tire
~ride with a group on the real open road
~routinely include a week day ride
         ~participate in a charity ride

i plan to blog about how the rides go, and what i learn.  i think in order to meet these goals, i'm going to have to be real good with how i manage my time.  i don't want to neglect my other hobbies, so it'll be a challenge.  i'm making great strides with my knitting, but hope to finish what's in my bag before i cast on anything else-well see how that goes.

adios march.

a few highlights from March-some I've already blogged about:  Alton Brown live at the Fox
A rare photo opportunity with Andrew-there's always something good cookin' when he's home.
Trunk Show at Cast on Cottage featuring Claudia of Claudia Hand Painted Yarns.

A new coat of paint in the dining room-very happy with the results, Andrew was a huge help with this project.  I've already decided on a window treatment and chair covers, just need to find the fabric that is in my head!  Aside from that I still need to put the artwork back on the walls, but I want to move things around so it might be this summer before the room is totally complete.
A few days off from work to do some sewing-enjoyed 2 sessions at Cottontail Quilts and I hosted Quilt Club this month-ALWAYS a good time, and I need to capture THAT in a photo.
There were some truly glorious days, and I tried to take advantage of them when I could.
Sophie did too!

Dinner out with these girls-friends from my KSU days.
Plans for April include finishing up the last of my cold weather knitting, finish 8 blocks for the Needle and Gun Quilt Club annual block exchange, tidy up closets.  Plan spring/summer knitting and enjoy the warm weather.

typical.

my willard pullover is blocked and ready to wear now that our temperatures are expected to be in the 80s. had i tried this on the first time i knit it, i'd have been able to wear it a couple times before storing it away for next year.  will i ever learn-let's hope so.
it is however exactly what i was hoping for in a pullover soft-drapy-warm cozy yarn and a basic design. i plan to do the basic round yoked cardigan in the fall.  the problem i had with this pattern is that i held the contrasting color too tight in the yoke.  i shouldn't have this problem in the basic round yoke since there will not be any contrasting color.  i have 2 more pullovers on the needles that i hope to finish by the end of April, so that they can be blocked in the warm sun and ready for fall wearing.  i plan to experiment with summer-y yarns and breezy drapy patterns next, especially pieces i can wear over a t-shirt-something i haven't done in quite a while.

Weekend lens.

We treated Andrew to an early birthday gift with tickets to Alton Brown's show Edible Inevitable Tour on Friday.  It was a lot of fun and Alton Brown was very entertaining.  Prior to the show we tried a new Greek restaurant near my office Cafe Mezo.  No liquor license yet, but you can bring your own wine with no corkage fee-It was very good and I hope to have a chance to go there for lunch.  Mezes means small plates, and they really are small plates.

Since I leave my office at 4, I had a little time to kill before the boys rolled into Atlanta.  I went to Esorpion for a cocktail, empanada and some chips and salsa, salsa counts as a vegetable right?!  There was a little knitting too.
It was a perfect evening to walk to the few blocks to the Fox, such an awesome venue.
When the boys are home that means serious cooking.  My first time ever making Sunday gravy, it was really good, and used a LOT of tomatoes!
Andrew made biscuits-they were square-i don't know why, but it was nice to sit down and eat breakfast together.
I decided to try another Smitten Kitchen recipe-Poppy Seed Lemon cake.  It was good, but I wish it was a little more lemon-y and more moist like a cake made with buttermilk or sour cream.  I chose the recipe because it used 8 egg yolks-yikes I know, but it allowed me to use the egg whites for my breakfast for the coming work week.  I look forward to trying more of her recipes, and I need to follow her blog.
There was also some play time-Sophie really enjoyed having her "brothers" home for the weekend.
A very nice facetime call with Roy, not fun that it was from a hospital room, but a nice way to send get well wishes.
Finally, the weekend ended with a special trunk show at Cast on Cottage featuring Claudia of Claudia's Hand Painted Yarns.  She is not only a talented dyer, but a super nice person as well.  I hope she makes another trip to the Cottage at some point.  Of course, I did a "little" stash enhancement while I was there-those purchases will be photos for another time.

time for a quickie.

i have ever intention of blogging about snowjam 2014 the sequel, but for now i'm
-catching up on blog reading
-working on my willard pullover (one sleeve nearly done!)
-drinking my last cup of coffee-for today.
-re-reading a very sweet and unexpected Valentine from a friend i haven't seen in a while
-getting ready to take my mother to her hair appointment.
-looking forward to a 3 day weekend after a 3 day work break courtesy of snow jam
-looking forward to 2 1/2 additional days off this next week-a sewing class, quilt club, and general de-cluttering are on the to-do list
-wondering what it's going to be like not having hot water until the new hot water heater is installed on MONDAY!!!

you know nothing really says Happy Valentine's Day than finding that your hot water heater has a rusted out bottom, and you spend a good hour or so shop vac-ing the basement floor!

what's your current "i am's"?

I do love red, especially if it's the deep-blueish red. orange-y red, not so much.  so here's my list for the 10 on Tuesday prompt.

10. my nearly finished Flax pullover-madeline tosh juniper-reminds me of chocolate cherries!
 9. flowers (roses and geraniums)
 8. lipstick
 7. shoes
 6. tomatoes
 5. strawberries
 4. grapes
 3. dining room walls (barn red for this)
 2. retro swimsuits
 1. wine

Nothing like a pop of red to make me smile.

on second glance.

my knitting fiasco might not be quite as bad as I first thought. I have no idea how this happened, but fortunately I can frog it back to the mistake and re-knit.  I was a bit concerned that the extra pattern repeat was previous to the  sleeve join which would have been a difficult fix indeed. I'm still thinking that I'll open a fresh bottle of wine when I begin this wretched process.  This pattern is Olde Town by Carole Sunday, and really stretched my knitting skills.  I'm just glad I found this mistake before I blocked it, could have made frogging it a bit more difficult. stay tuned.
